Toronto FC (3W-4L-5T, 14 points) dropped a 4-2 result against the reigning MLS Cup champions Inter Miami CF (6W-2L-4T, 22 points) on Saturday afternoon at BMO Field, despite a second-half brace from Emilio Aristizábal in the club’s final home match before the FIFA World Cup 2026 break.
As part of the club’s milestone 20th season celebrations, Toronto FC honoured former striker and Designated Player Jozy Altidore during Saturday’s match against Inter Miami CF. The American, who spent seven seasons with the Reds, delivered the match ball prior to kick-off and was inducted into Legends Row at BMO Field during half-time.
Toronto FC Head Coach Robin Fraser made five changes from Tuesday’s side against Atlético Ottawa in the Canadian Championship with Dániel Sallói, Raheem Edwards, Zane Monlouis, Malik Henry and Alonso Coello in place of Reid Fisher, Jackson Gilman, Antone Bossenberry, Jahmarie Nolan and Derrick Etienne Jr.
After a tightly-contested opening half, Inter Miami took the lead in the 44th minute when Rodrigo De Paul fired home a well-struck volley after his direct free-kick rebounded off the TFC wall.
The reigning MLS Cup champions doubled their advantage in the 56th minute as Luis Suárez converted from Lionel Messi’s pass while TFC defender Raheem Edwards was down injured following a tackle, with the goal ultimately standing.
The visitors added a third in the 73rd minute when Sergio Reguilón latched onto Messi’s through ball and finished with his right foot before the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi got on the scoresheet himself two minutes later, slotting home from De Paul’s pass inside the box.
The Reds responded in the 82nd minute after capitalizing on David Ayala’s defensive error, with Dániel Sallói squaring the ball for substitute Emilio Aristizábal to tap home from close range.
The 82nd minute strike marked Aristizábal’s second goal for TFC and Sallói’s team-leading eighth goal contribution of the season.
TFC added a second in the 90th minute when Walker Zimmerman found Kobe Franklin in space on the right flank, whose cross was met by a powerful header from Emilio Aristizábal.
The 90th minute effort marked the Colombian striker’s first brace for TFC, while Zimmerman recorded his first assist for the Reds on the play.
The hosts pushed for another late goal, with Derrick Etienne Jr. denied a late penalty shout and Zimmerman coming inches away from scoring with a powerful header in stoppage time, but Inter Miami ultimately held on for a 4-2 victory at BMO Field.
Toronto FC hit the road next to take on Charlotte FC on Saturday, May 16. Kick-off from Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina is set for 7:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast globally on Apple TV and on TSN5 in Canada.
