Toronto FC forward Theo Corbeanu has been named to the MLS Team of the Matchday for Matchday 25, as a substitute, after an impressive performance in the club’s 1-0 victory over the Western Conference leaders San Diego FC at Snapdragon Stadium.

Making his 20th appearance and 16th start of the 2025 MLS season, Theo Corbeanu was a bright spark from the first whistle in the midweek contest. In the 17th minute, his quick footwork drew a foul from defender Franco Negri in the penalty area, leaving referee Alyssa Pennington with no choice but to point to the spot after an in-stadium video review. The Canadian winger stepped up himself and emphatically buried the penalty into the top-right corner past goalkeeper Pablo Sisniega to give the visitors a crucial early lead

The 20th minute strike, Corbeanu’s first penalty for the Reds, marked a team-leading fifth MLS goal of the season and a joint-team-leading eighth goal contribution (six goals, two assists) across all competitions in 2025.

Corbeanu’s standout display earned him Man of the Match honours, highlighted by his first-half penalty that ultimately proved decisive. The Hamilton, Ontario native’s conversion from 12 yards stood as the game-winner on the night as TFC produced a resilient defensive display to secure a 1-0 road victory and three hard-earned points against the MLS newcomers in California.

The honour marks Corbeanu’s second MLS Team of the Matchday selection since joining the Reds in January 2025. In total, Toronto FC have now earned 10 MLS Team of the Matchday selections during the 2025 MLS regular season – Sean Johnson (3), Federico Bernardeschi (2), Theo Corbeanu (2), Ola Brynhildsen (1), Alonso Coello (1) and Lorenzo Insigne (1).
