TFC will look to return to winning ways in this weekend’s highly anticipated MLS Rivalry Week matchup against CF Montréal. Historically, Toronto FC lead the head-to-head series in regular season play with a 16W-14L-5T record through 35 meetings with the Bleu-blanc-noir and will be looking to replicate last season’s road victory from July 2024.
BEHIND ENEMY LINES
Toronto FC continue their 2025 Major League Soccer campaign with a Rivalry Week matchup against CF Montréal on Saturday afternoon. After defeating Real Salt Lake in their last away match in April, the Reds hold a 55W-168L-74T all-time record (239 points) in MLS regular season matches played on the road.

AN ODE TO THE PAST
TFC take on rivals CF Montréal in the latest ‘401 Derby,’ marking the 36th meeting in the all-time regular season series between the two clubs. Historically, Toronto FC lead the head-to-head series in regular season play with a 16W-14L-5T record through 35 meetings with the Bleu-blanc-noir. The two Canadian clubs have previously faced off at Stade Saputo 14 times, with the Reds outscoring Montréal 20-14, posting eight wins, five losses and one tie at the soccer-specific stadium. On Saturday, the Reds will be looking for a repeat of last season’s 1-0 road victory over Montréal on July 20, 2024.
STEP BY STEP
The Reds will look to bounce back from their midweek 1-0 loss to FC Cincinnati. TFC goalkeeper Sean Johnson continued his impressive start to the campaign with six saves on the night. Kévin Denkey’s 18th minute goal, however, proved to be the difference at BMO Field on Wednesday.
Four nights earlier, Toronto FC recorded their second win of the campaign with a 2-0 shutout victory over D.C. United at BMO Field. TFC opened the scoring when Theo Corbeanu’s cross was met by a low, diving header from Lorenzo Insigne, making it 1-0 four minutes into the second half. The opener marked Insigne’s first goal of the 2025 season and Corbeanu’s first MLS assist for TFC. The hosts then doubled their advantage twenty minutes later via an own goal scored by D.C. United’s Lucas Bartlett. Toronto’s defensive unit held firm to secure all three points and their fourth clean sheet of the season.
RED VS. BLUE
Dubbed the ‘401 Derby’ and the ‘Canadian Classique’, the rivalry between Toronto FC and CF Montréal remains one of the most intense in Canadian club soccer. Since their first competitive meeting in May 2008, the two clubs have faced off more than 50 times with Toronto FC leading the all-time series 26W-23L-10T across all competitions (Major League Soccer, MLS Cup Playoffs, MLS is Back and Canadian Championship).
Historically, Toronto FC have lifted the Supporters’ Shield once (2017), won MLS Cup (2017) and captured the Canadian Championship a record eight times (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2020). CF Montréal, meanwhile, have claimed the Voyageurs Cup on five occasions (2008, 2013, 2014, 2019 and 2021), with their deepest MLS Cup Playoffs run coming in 2016, when they were eliminated 7-5 on aggregate by Toronto FC in the MLS Eastern Conference final.
In 2024, Toronto FC completed the MLS regular season double over their arch-rivals with victories, both home and away. First, the Reds ran out emphatic 5-1 winners at BMO Field on May 18, courtesy of Federico Bernardeschi’s hat-trick and goals from Matty Longstaff and Prince Owusu. Two months later, TFC completed the series sweep with a 1-0 road win, thanks to Richie Laryea’s 38th minute strike at Stade Saputo.
Toronto FC and CF Montréal will meet again on August 30 at BMO Field to complete the 2025 MLS regular season series.

ONCE A RED
TFC will face off against a pair of former Reds in CF Montréal’s Luca Petrasso and Prince Owusu on Saturday afternoon. Petrasso came through the ranks after joining the Toronto FC Academy in January 2013. He spent four seasons with Toronto FC II before signing with Toronto FC as a Homegrown Player on January 11, 2022. In 2022, the Toronto, Ontario native made 27 appearances with TFC before joining Orlando City SC in November. After making 17 appearances across two seasons (2023, 2024) with Orlando, Petrasso joined CF Montréal in February 2025, where he has made 14 appearances (across all competitions) for the Bleu-blanc-noir.
Prince Owusu joined Toronto FC in August 2023 and scored 12 goals in 45 appearances across two seasons (2023, 2024) with the Reds. Earlier this year, the German forward joined CF Montréal in January and has since scored three goals in 14 appearances for his new club.
Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty, another product of the TFC Academy, spent five seasons with Toronto FC before being traded to CF Montréal in August 2024. The Brampton, Ontario native made six appearances for the Bleu-blanc-noir before joining Charlotte FC on loan last month.
