Recap: Canada U-23 Drops First Qualifying Match

Jay Chapman Match Preview

Canada’s Men’s U-23 Team suffered a 3-1 loss against the United States in their opening group match of the 2015 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifiers Thursday night.

Head Coach Benito Floro named Toronto FC and Toronto FC II players Chris Mannella and Skylar Thomas to the Starting XI for Canada in Thursday’s loss.

Jay Chapman and Mo Babouli also made appearances in the match, coming on in the 66th and 88th minute of the match.

The Americans couldn’t have asked for a better start as forward Jordan Morris scored 36 seconds into the match at Sporting Park in Kansas City.

Jerome Kiesewetter put in a great cross that was just out of the reach of Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau and right onto the head of Morris who redirected it into the back of the net.

Later in the half Crepeau was called upon and made a huge fingertip save on Kiesewetter to deny the United States their second of the match.

Crepeau was tested once again in the 64th minute and came up with a breakaway save on Kiesewetter to keep Canada in the game.

Unfortunately for the Canadians, Morris notched his second of the match a few minutes later, latching onto a long pass made by Wil Trapp and sliding it by Crepeau to put the US up by 2.

Canada managed to pull one back in the 81st minute.

Off a corner kick, Chris Mannella picked out an unmarked Petrasso at the near post and Petrasso flicked a header past US goalkeeper Zack Steffen.

The US restored their two-goal lead in stoppage time from the penalty spot.

Jeremy Gagnon-Lapare was called for tripping up Keisewetter in the box and Keisewetter made no mistake, sending Crepeau the wrong way to seal the win for the Americans.

Canada returns to action this Saturday (2:30 PM ET) against Panama. You can catch the match live on TLN and Youtube.com/CanadaSoccerTV
