Canada’s Men’s U23 team played to a scoreless draw against Panama on Thursday in their second match of the group stage.
Head Coach Antonio Floro made a few changes to his line-up, opting for Jackson Farmer at centre back over TFC II’s Adam Bouchard who started against Brazil in the opening match for Canada.
Both Mo Babouli and Chris Mannella were named to the starting eleven for the second time in the tournament. Chris Mannella continues to captain the young Canadian side.
TFC Academy’s Kevon Black was also in the starting lineup for Canada. The nineteen year old has started in both group stage matches for Antonio Floro’s men.
TFC II’s Manny Aparicio and Raheem Edwards checked in for Canada in the second half and provided a spark that was missing for majority of the first half.
Canada's best opportunity came in the opening minute of the match. Ben Fisk was able to brush off a Panama defender and poke the ball past the rushing Panama keeper, but his shot from a tough angle hit the outside of the post.
It’s an uphill battle from here on out for the Canadians. With the top two teams advancing to the semifinals, Canada must pick up a win against Peru in their next match to have any chance of making it past the group stages.
Brazil leads the group with 6 points, followed by Panama with 4 and Canada with 1. Peru sits last in the group with 0 points.
Canada takes on Peru in their final match of the group stage on Monday, July 20 (8:35PM ET/Sportsnet).
