Toronto FC (5W-7L-10T, 25 points) extended their unbeaten run to five matches with a 1-1 draw against New York City FC (7W-8L-7T, 28 points) on Saturday evening, as Dániel Sallói’s 70th minute strike cancelled out Nicolás Fernández’s opener at BMO Field.
Toronto FC Head Coach Robin Fraser made a pair of changes from the side that started in the 2-1 road against Inter Miami CF last weekend with Walker Zimmerman and Theo Corbeanu returning in place of Zane Monlouis and Dániel Sallói.
New York City FC opened the scoring in the 29th minute when Nicolás Fernández collected a pass from Agustín Ojeda before firing a powerful, low effort from outside the box into the bottom corner.
Toronto FC created its best chances of the opening half on either side of Fernández’s opener, with goalkeeper Matt Freese called into action to deny well-struck long-range efforts from Alonso Coello in the ninth minute and Djordje Mihailovic deep into first-half stoppage time.
TFC came within inches of finding an equalizer in the 59th minute when Djordje Mihailovic’s out-swinging corner found Walker Zimmerman, whose downward header forced a sharp reaction save from Matt Freese.
Toronto FC found a deserved breakthrough when Alonso Coello released Theo Corbeanu into space down the right flank, with the winger’s sweeping cross met by Dániel Sallói, who made a perfectly timed run from the left to guide the ball home beyond Freese.
The 70th minute equalizer marked the Hungarian substitute’s 13th goal contribution of the season (six goals, seven assists), while extending his run of recording a goal involvement to four consecutive MLS matches.
Both sides pushed for a late winner, but neither could find the decisive breakthrough as the points were shared for a second consecutive 1-1 draw between the Eastern Conference clubs in the space of 29 days.
