Toronto FC II plays host to the Rochester Rhinos at the Ontario Soccer Centre this Wednesday at 730PM ET.
The Young Reds go into the game having won two straight USL matches for the first time in franchise history. Impressive wins against Bethlehem and Harrisburg City have the Reds within 5 points of a playoff position.
One of the reasons for the team’s recent run of form has been the emergence of young forward Ayo Akinola. The 16-year-old scored his first two professional goals in the team’s last match and was named to the USL Team of the Week.
“Scoring my first double in a professional match was a dream come true,” added Akinola. “Hopefully I can build off of that in tomorrows game.”
This will be the second of three meetings between the two teams this season. The Reds won the first matchup 2-1 at home back on June 11. Goals from Lucca Uccello and Malik Johnson secured the three points for the Reds.
The Rhinos are coming into Wednesday’s matchup unbeaten in their last 5 games (3-0-2). The team currently sits in 5th place in the eastern conference. In their most recent match, they defeated FC Montreal 3-1 at Rochester Rhinos Stadium. The Rhinos scored all three of their goals vs. Montreal via set pieces.
When asked about defending Rochester’s set pieces coach Jason Bent had this to say, “We know [Christian] Volesky is in a decent run of form … as well as [Steevan] Dos Santos. We have to be mindful of those players [off set pieces].”
Players to Watch
Christian Volesky: Volesky is the Rhino’s leading scorer with 6 goals in 17 matches. He added a goal and an assist in their most recent match. Last season Volesky led the team in goals (8) on the way to the team’s 2015 USL Championship.
Steevan Dos Santos: Dos Santos was a dangerous player last time these two teams met. He registered 5 shots (2 on target) but was unable to breakthrough. He has scored in 2 of his last 3 matches. TFC II will have to make some adjustments if they hope to keep him off the score sheet again.
