Mannella Stresses the Importance of Preseason

Toronto FC II’s first season in the USL was a rollercoaster ride to say the least.

For TFC II Captain Chris Mannella and the rest of the squad it was a learning experience. This was a group of players that had yet to play and experience the game at such a professional level.

“We were a new side last year and it was my first professional season so there was a lot to learn about the in and outs of being a pro,” said Mannella. “I think we’re definitely more prepared coming into this season. A lot of the guys have a year of experience under their belts at the professional level.”

To no surprise, expectations are deemed to be higher for a team that is entering its second season in the league. With that in mind, Mannella has stressed the importance of preseason as the team inches closer and closer to their opening match of the season on March 26 against New York Red Bulls II.

“Preseason is obviously important. Not only do we get to bond with each other off the field but also we get to be with each other 24 hours a day learning the system of play going into the season,” he said.
“For the younger guys it’s a good transition from the Kia TFC Academy into the USL and the guys on the team that have USL experience can help them adapt to the level of play,” he added.

Assisting those players coming up from the Senior Kia TFC Academy team is a responsibility that Mannella takes pride in as a leader for the club, both on and off the pitch.

“When I was coming up through the ranks I had guys that I relied on as well. Steven Caldwell was a big one for me in my first preseason [with the first team] and experiencing that showed me how I should treat the younger guys and help them through this process.”

“I want to be a leader and want to make sure we get the best out of the guys,” he continued, “Hopefully they can follow the same path as me [in signing with the first team] because it’s ultimately what we’re working towards and I’m here to help them as much as I can.”

Regardless of the inexperience of some of the players on the squad, Mannella, as well as many others, have been clear on the team’s goal this season – playoffs.

“We reflect on last season’s faults and only hope to be better this year. We want to make the playoffs this season and compete for a championship.”
