The Kia TFC Academy finished second following the second round of the Generation adidas Cup east region qualifying this past weekend.
With a three-way tie on the head-to-head tie breaker for first place (TFCA defeated New York Red Bulls in October, NYRB defeated DC United, DC United defeated TFCA), goal differential would decide who would finish in the top three positions.
The squad will now play against other international clubs in the Champions Division, a final group stage that will determine the overall winners of the 2015-2016 tournament.
The tournament will take place in Frisco, Texas, on March 18-26. Past winners of the tournament include Argentinian side River Plate and English club Stoke City.
Recap of Second Round Matches
Toronto FC Academy 1-0 Orlando City SC
The Kia Toronto FC Academy kicked off the second round of Generation adidas Cup East region qualifying with a 1-0 victory against hosts Orlando City.
Midfielder Kota Sakurai had the lone goal of the match. Sakurai pounced on a rebound following a big save by the Orlando City keeper and headered it into the left corner to give the Reds the lead just before halftime.
The squad had a few decent opportunities throughout the match, including an effort by midfielder Ethan Beckford that hit the post and a header late on by forward Ayo Akinola that rung the crossbar.
Goalkeeper Gianluca Catalano picked up the shutout for the Reds.
Toronto FC Academy 1(5) – 1(4) New England Revolution
The Kia Toronto FC Academy took on New England Revolution in their second match of the weekend.
The Reds dominated for long stretches but were unable to put a finishing touch on some great scoring opportunities.
The constant pressure by TFCA finally paid off in the 76th minute as substitute Armando Carracciolo headered in the opening goal following some great work from forward Shaan Hundal.
The Revolution equalized in stoppage time off a wide set piece to send the match into penalty kicks.
Goalkeeper Gianluca Catalano came up huge for the Reds, making two saves in the shootout to give his team the three points.
Kia Toronto FC Academy 2(8) – 2(9) New York Red Bulls
It was a clash of the two top teams in the final match of the weekend, as the Kia TFC Academy and the New York Red Bulls sat first and second in the group going into the encounter.
It was the second match between the two teams. The first encounter in the qualification round ended in a 2-1 victory for TFCA back in October.
It looked like TFCA had the opening goal in the 15th minute from a well-taken free kick by midfielder Marko Mandekic, but the play was called back for an apparent push in the wall – questionable to say the least.
Five minutes later Shaan Hundal hit a shot into the bottom corner of the net past the Red Bulls keeper to give TFCA a 1-0 lead.
Early on in the second half midfielder Josh Moreira slipped a pass in for Hundal who made no mistake for his second of the match, extending Kia TFC Academy’s lead to 2.
New York got on the board in the 55th minute, as a Red Bulls forward intercepted an erroneous back pass and rounded the keeper before slotting it home.
The Red Bulls made it a 2-2 match in the 74th minute on a counter-attack following a turnover in midfield.
Penalty kicks would decide the victor for the second time in three matches for TFCA.
It was a back and forth display of clinical penalties that saw TFCA lose in the 10th round, as their shot struck the wrong side of the post.
